GUWAHATI: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to establish a multi-purpose facility in Assam. This move aims to enhance India’s space capabilities and promote space education in the region.
The facility will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s space assets and improving weather advisory services. It will also serve as a hub for space-related activities in the state.
Keshab Mahanta, Minister for Revenue, Disaster Management, IT, Science & Technology, and Climate Change, Govt. of Assam, and V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space & Chairman, ISRO, conducted a reconnaissance visit to the proposed site.
Speaking to the media after the inspection of the site, the ISRO chairman said that a highly powerful and advanced radar system would be established at the NETRA project site within this year.
“This radar will be capable of continuously monitoring a range of up to 2000 km in space and accurately detecting objects as small as ten centimetres. It may take four years to complete the entire project. Through the NETRA centre, continuous surveillance of satellites and space debris, as well as any space-borne threats, will be carried out,” he said.
Additionally, the Assam government has proposed the establishment of a space museum in the region. ISRO has welcomed the proposal, expressing its commitment to collaborating on the project.
