JORHAT: The Jorhat district administration in Assam has launched the second phase of a major cleanup effort to restore the Bhogdoi River, a vital water source for Jorhat town.

The cleanup is part of a three-phase project that began on December 17, 2024, aiming to reverse years of environmental damage that has turned the river into an open dumping site.

The operation involves a dedicated 40-member team from Civil Defence, supported by civilian volunteers. The current phase focuses on cleaning the stretch between the AT Road Bridge and the Railway Iron Gate, following the successful completion of the first phase from Puja Dubi Ghat to AT Road Bridge. The final phase will address the section between the Railway Iron Gate and the Jorhat town bypass road bridge.

Jorhat's Deputy Commissioner, Jay Shivani, emphasized that the Bhogdoi River has suffered from severe pollution and encroachment over the years. The goal of this initiative is not only to clean the river but also to restore its natural ecosystem and cultural importance to the town.

While the cleanup is an essential first step, long-term conservation efforts and active community involvement will be crucial for the river's sustainable recovery.

This project represents a major commitment by the district administration to revitalize the Bhogdoi River and ensure it continues to play a crucial role in the community's development and environment.
