DHEKIAJULI: The sensational incident of an attack and attempted murder on a journalist by the sand-gravel mafia at Panchnoi under Dhekiajuli police station took a new turn. Due to negligence in the investigation, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha on Wednesday suspended the Investigating Officer and Officer-in-Charge of Rakhasmari police outpost, Charukamal Rajbanshi.
On Sunday afternoon, electronic channel ND24’s Dhekiajuli correspondent Bimaljyoti Nath was brutally attacked by members of the sand-gravel mafia while returning after reporting on illegal mining activities in the ecologically sensitive area of the Panchnoi river, which lies along the border of Udalguri and Sonitpur districts.
Following the incident, Charukamal Rajbanshi had swiftly arrested four persons involved in the attack, Prashanta Nath alias Jon, Aniram Basumatary, Kapil Nath, and Pankaj Nath alias Babul. However, the Investigating Officer produced the accused in court only after the mandatory 24-hour period had elapsed, resulting in the court granting them bail. The police, however, re-arrested them in connection with another case registered at Majbat police station, due to which they remain in judicial custody. Nevertheless, Charukamal Rajbanshi was suspended for his lapses during the investigation.
