BOKAKHAT: Two thieves broke into the house of Jitul Saikia of Ruawabahi’s 2 No. Parongoniya under Bokakhat Police Station and launched a brutal attack on him when he walked into the house on Wednesday night.

Taking advantage of the annual Bhaona (traditional play) being held at the 2 No. Parongoniya Namghar (community prayer hall) on Wednesday, the thief executed a planned raid. The play titled ‘Ekalavya’s Guru Dakshina,’ performed by children, was being staged at the Namghar. Namghar Secretary Jitul Saikia had gone home to bring money to honour the performers of the Bhaona. As soon as he entered the house, the two thieves, who were in the midst of the theft, attacked him repeatedly.

The thieves broke open a steel almirah and stole his personal savings along with public funds and gold and silver jewelry. On encountering Jitul Saikia, the thieves attacked him and fled. Though people from the Bhaona gathering rushed to the scene upon hearing his screams, they failed to catch the culprits.

Jitul Saikia, who suffered injuries to his head and arms, was later taken to the Bokakhat Shahid Kamala Miri Civil Hospital in critical condition with the help of 108 emergency services.
