SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has said that the second round of border talks with Assam which are intended to settle long-standing territorial disputes will soon resume. After being postponed because of elections, by-elections, and other urgent issues, the negotiations are again scheduled to begin.

Six places – Langpih, Borduar, Deshdoomreah, Block I–II, Psiar–Khanduli, and Nongwah–Mawtamur- will be the points around which the discussion will be concentrated. These six are the focal points of long-running controversy and sources of tension between these two neighboring states.

The decision to resume discussions came after the Meghalaya government extended the deadline of its three Regional Committees for submitting their reports on border concerns. The deadline for resuming the talks has been set at December 31, 2024. This trio of committees plays a critical role in formulating suggestions and checking the ground situation so as to reach a mutually acceptable decision.

Meghalaya and Assam have asserted that they are committed to finding peaceful solutions. The second round of talks is expected to take off from where the first round ended, which was earlier and has been perceived as a positive step in easing tensions.

Addressing historical grievances requires mutual understanding and communication, Chief Minister Sangma said, underscoring the need for cooperation. It is believed that the discussions constitute a major step in promoting peace and stability in the area.
