MESSO Hosts Muga Reshim Vigyan Krishi Mela in Kokrajhar to Boost Silk Industry

KOKRAJHAR: The Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO), in association with Central Silk Board and P3 Unit, Kowabil, organized Muga Reshim Vigyan Krishi Mela at IT Park in Kokrajhar to promote and expand muga and eri culture.

The recently concluded Muga Reshom Vigyan Krishi Mela 2025 witnessed an overwhelming response from muga farmers, researchers, and industry experts. The event served as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, showcasing the latest advancements in muga sericulture, sustainable farming practices, and value-added silk production.

Dr NK Bhatia, Director MESSO and Chairman of the event, and Dr Suraksha Chanotra, Scientist-B and In-charge of P3 Unit Kowabil, who was the programme coordinator, emphasized the significance of the Muga Reshom Vigyan Krishi Mela 2025, and role of CSB MESSO in promoting and expanding muga culture. With over 475 farmers and stakeholders in attendance, the mela featured expert-led sessions on improved sericulture practices in muga culture, diseases and pest management, host plant cultivation, farm maintenance, and government schemes supporting sericulture. Hands-on demonstrations, live exhibits of modern rearing techniques, and interactive discussions further enriched the experience for participants.

Major highlights of the event were speeches by experts like Dr Jogesh Deuri, retired Director, Directorate of Sericulture, Adabari, BTC Kokrajhar, and eminent scientist Dr BN Sarkar, Dr Lopa Mudra Guha, and Dr Hridya H that provided deep insights to the farmers about muga culture on scientific lines. Additionally, success stories from progressive sericulture farmers inspired attendees to adopt best practices and maximize productivity.

The exhibition segment showcased cutting-edge tools, modern rearing practices, and eco-friendly pest management solutions. Industry representatives also facilitated market linkages, connecting farmers with potential buyers and silk cooperatives.

Speaking on the success of the event, Dr NK Bhatia, Director, MESSO, CSB, Guwahati, said, “This Krishi Mela has empowered our sericulture farmers with vital knowledge and resources. By bridging the gap between research and practice, we aim to strengthen India’s silk industry and enhance farmer incomes.

The Chief Guest of the mela Daobaisa Boro, EM Sericulture, BTC, Kokrajhar-Assam, inaugurated the event, inspiring muga rearers with his call for rural upliftment and empowerment through sericulture. On the occasion, a technical bulletin on ‘Muga Grainage Technology: Key to successful muga culture’ and one booklet on ‘Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITKs) in Muga Culture’ in trilingual version (Assamese, Hindi & English) were released with an aim to provide technical guidance for muga farmers.

Dr Anjan Chakraborty, Director, DoS, Adabari, Kokrajhar and Ranjit Bhatacharjee, ADS, Adabari, shared their expertise and insights on muga culture and seed production. The event was also graced by the presence of Dr Dulur Barhma, Faculty of Bodoland University, Kokrajhar, who expressed great scope of muga industry in BTC area. The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony recognizing outstanding contributors in the field of muga sector. In recognition of their outstanding performance by quality muga seed cocoon production, three adopted seed rearers and two private graineurs were felicitated for their remarkable contribution in the muga sector.  The event concluded as a grand success where farmers and stakeholders acknowledged the initiatives of MESSO, CSB, and staff for their outstanding contribution in rendering the technical knowledge and supply of quality dfls from time to time.
