BOKAKHAT: Namrata Bora, a law student and daughter of Ramen Kumar Bora, an Assistant Teacher at Kamargaon Higher Secondary School and resident of Dhodang Gaon in Numaligarh, Bokakhat subdivision, tragically lost her life in a horrific road accident in Nongpoh, Meghalaya on June 4.

The devastating news of her death in an accident at Chanbangla in the Ri-Bhoi district of Shillong’s Nongpoh reached her family on June 4. Namrata was travelling with five others in a Hyundai Alcazar vehicle (registration No. AS01EV9578) when the accident occurred. While Namrata succumbed to her injuries, another passenger sustained serious injuries.

As the family rushed to the Nongpoh hospital, they began uncovering several unsettling details that have since enshrouded the entire incident in mystery.

Namrata’s father first learned of the accident when a young woman from New Delhi called him. The family collected the phone numbers and began contacting the other passengers who were with Namrata. They learned that the group had gone to Shillong to witness the sunrise and were returning when their vehicle met with the accident.

Upon reaching Nongpoh hospital and the local police station, the family discovered that the driver had fled the scene with the vehicle after the accident, leaving locals to transport Namrata, already in a critical condition, to the hospital, where she was declared dead.

Subsequently, one Mohammed Ismail Haque Choudhury was presented at the Nongpoh police station as the driver by Anayatullah Watuch, the registered owner of the car. But the situation took a dramatic turn when senior advocate Hrishikesh Borgohain of the Gauhati High Court expressed serious doubts about the claim, leading to an investigation that revealed that Mohammed Ismail Haque Choudhury was never in the car. It was discovered that the driver on the night of the accident was Anayatullah Watuch himself, the son of AIUDF MLA Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury and a youth leader of the same party.

Shockingly, after the accident, Anayatullah and the other passengers had fled the scene with the vehicle.

After learning this, Namrata’s family filed a case at Nongpoh police station. Anayatullah was later arrested in Guwahati along with the vehicle. The other co-passengers, Gayatri Bora (25 years) from Mangaldai, Mriganka Baruah (26 years) from Golaghat, and Pragya Dihingia (26 years) from Charaideo were also brought to the Nongpoh police station for questioning.

After bringing Namrata’s body home and performing her last rites, her family filed another FIR at the Dispur police station on June 5.

Namrata’s father shared that it had now been one full month since the tragic event, yet none of the four people who accompanied Namrata to Meghalaya had reached out to her family. Moreover, no chargesheet has been filed in the case yet, while Namrata’s father waits for justice.
