DIBRUGARH: A new old age home facility dedicated to providing senior citizens with independent and dignified living opened its doors in the picturesque Pub Banipur area of Dibrugarh, nestled among the tea gardens.

The Dibrugarh Old Age Home, which recently completed construction, represents the culmination of over a decade of planning and community effort. The modern facility features 12 individual rooms and two dormitories, with the capacity to accommodate up to 50 senior citizens in comfortable, well-equipped surroundings.

The project began taking shape in 2013 when a group of like-minded individuals came together to form the Dibrugarh Old Age Home and Benevolent Trust. The initiative was born out of a recognized need in the community, where elderly residents often struggled to find appropriate care facilities. Trustees Manoj Barman, Atul Borgohain, Prakash Barooah, and Masood Khan were present during the press meet.

“We have dreamed of an old age home in Dibrugarh which has all facilities because there is a scarcity of old age homes in Dibrugarh where elderly or senior citizens can stay. We have faced lots of problems in construction of the old age home but at last it was managed,” said Atul Borgohain, President of the Dibrugarh Old Age Home and Benevolent Trust.

The trust comprises 27 founder members, all of whom are recognized personalities from Dibrugarh. The facility’s existence owes much to the generosity of philanthropist Manoj Barman, who donated 2 bighas and 2 kathas of land for the project. Barman’s vision was to create a sanctuary where senior citizens who had been neglected by their children could find refuge and live with dignity.

“We have often seen that elderly persons and senior citizens are neglected by their own children and they look for shelter or old age homes where they can live the rest of their life. Our old age home is equipped with all modern facilities and will help them to lead a dignified life,” Borgohain said.

The project received significant support from major corporations in the region through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. Oil India Limited, Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) all contributed funds that proved crucial to the home’s completion.
