SILCHAR: Following a whole-night protest by students, the NIT authority on Friday wee hours, suspended Dr D Koteswar Raju, Assistant Professor, for allegedly molesting a student.
A first-year female student accused Raju of touching her with bad intentions. She informed her fellow students and a mass protest erupted eventually which lasted throughout the night. Hundreds of students were seen out in the campus shouting for strict action against the teacher. Finally, the authorities decided to suspend Raju.
Confirming the incident, Prof Dilip Kumar Baidya, Director of Silchar NIT, said that the Internal Complaint Committee had already initiated an investigation into the allegation. Further, he added that the suspension letter had already been handed over to the accused teacher. Cachar Police has detained the NIT professor and brought him to Sadar Thana for interrogation.
Sources inside the NIT said that Raju had a previous record of indecent behaviour towards female students. One such incident rolled into a formal complaint, though no steps were taken against him.
