SILCHAR: The fate of Barak Valley remains uncertain as the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) cancelled several passenger trains for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

An NFR source stated that, following a recent landslide in the Lumding–Badarpur hill section that disrupted train services, continuous efforts are being made by the Railways and State authorities for early restoration. However, local sources in the Lampur–Jatinga area indicated that it may take a few more days to clear the track of debris.

According to the NFR source, approximately 50,000 cubic metres of muck and stones had accumulated against the railway retaining wall. Of this, at least 30,000 cubic metres must be cleared before restoration work on the track can begin.

A high-level emergency meeting was convened to assess the situation and formulate immediate solutions. It was attended by senior officials from the N.F. Railway, the State Government, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), and other concerned agencies.

Train operations have been suspended to ensure the safety of passengers and railway assets. The Northeast Frontier Railway is working around the clock, deploying heavy machinery, equipment, and manpower to remove debris and restore the track as soon as possible. Continuous joint monitoring and coordinated efforts are underway, and train services are expected to resume once the line is declared safe, the source added.

Meanwhile, the NFR has cancelled several trains due to the ongoing disruption. These include: Rangiya–Silchar Express; Silchar–Rangiya Express and Guwahati–Silchar Express (June 24). Further cancellations for June 25 include: Silchar–Guwahati Express; Guwahati–Badarpur–Guwahati Tourist Express and New Delhi–Guwahati Express.

Additionally, the Bengaluru–Agartala Humsafar Express, scheduled to depart on June 27, has also been cancelled.
