NSO Dibrugarh celebrates Statistics Day with Talks, Quiz, and Tributes to Mahalanobis

The 19th National Statistics Day was celebrated by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operations Division, (FOD), Regional Office Dibrugarh, on Sunday.

DIBRUGARH: The 19th National Statistics Day was celebrated by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operations Division, (FOD), Regional Office Dibrugarh, on Sunday. The event, held under the theme ‘75 Years of National Sample Survey,’ commemorated the birth anniversary of Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the pioneer known as the father of Indian Statistics, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to establishing India’s national statistical framework.

RN Soreithem, Director of RO Dibrugarh, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significant role of statistical surveys in shaping India’s socio-economic development. He encouraged participants to foster statistical literacy and underscored the importance of data in informed decision-making.

Dr Kuki Kalpita Mahanta, Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics, Dibrugarh University, delivered the keynote address at the event, praising the NSO for achieving this historic milestone in serving the nation.  She emphasized the vital role of statistics in contemporary research, planning, and policymaking.

The celebration featured various activities, including a quiz competition, a photo exhibition showcasing the life of Prof Mahalanobis and the initiatives undertaken by NSO, RO Dibrugarh, as well as paper presentation by Dr Irani Saikia, Assistant Professor, Statistics Department, Dibrugarh University. The event ended with a word of appreciation and a collective commitment to promote statistical awareness and encourage data-driven decision-making in society.
