ORANG: The newly-formed central committee and BTR committee of the All Kalita Tribe Students’ Union (AKTSU) took oath on Sunday at the premises of Durga Mandir, Paneri. The occasion also featured a felicitation ceremony for nearly 200 meritorious students who excelled in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary (HS) final examinations 2025. Each awardee received a certificate of honour and a book from the organization.

The ceremony, chaired by retired vice-principal of Paneri HS School, Taranath Kalita, was attended by a large gathering, including AKTSU Chief Adviser and former ULFA leader Jiten Dutta, retired Principal Niladhar Deka, Bhergaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer Durga Kinkar Sharma, former ABSU leader Rabindra Boro, among others.

Addressing the gathering, Nayan Kalita, general secretary of the Kalita Alpine Students’ Union, demanded a special reservation policy for the Kalita community similar to that granted to other ethnic groups in Assam, along with land rights for Kalitas in BTR areas. He warned that unless political parties provide a written assurance on granting these rights before the upcoming BTC elections, the community may boycott the polls.

BTR Committee president Ratul Barman strongly condemned derogatory remarks allegedly made by Tribal Block & Belt Student Union Adviser Raju Dewri against State BJP president DIlip Saikia, stating such statements undermine the 5,000-year-old heritage of the Kalita community.

AKTSU Chief Adviser Jiten Dutta urged all Kalita organizations and groups across Assam to unite for resolving long-pending issues of the community. He criticized successive governments for using the Kalita people merely as a vote bank, while ministers from the community have remained silent on key issues.

AKTSU central president Abhishek Raj Kalita reiterated their primary demand for immediate special reservation status and advancement of education opportunities for the community, warning that the union will not sit idle if the government fails to respond.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous resolution to intensify the movement for securing the Kalita community’s rights in Assam and the Bodoland Territorial Region.
