Obituary: Retired Teacher Swarna Hazarika

Swarna Hazarika, a retired teacher, author, former scribe and a literary pensioner from Lehugaon, Biswanath Chariali, passed away

Swarna Hazarika, a retired teacher, author, former scribe and a literary pensioner from Lehugaon, Biswanath Chariali, passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Monday. She was 86. Born in 1936, Swarna Hazarika had been working relentlessly as a Hindi teacher since 1956. She also taught at Chariali Girls' Higher Secondary School, Kalabari Higher Secondary School, Kasturba Middle English School and Chariali Academy. She retired from her service in 1992. Late Hazarika was also the founder Principal of Chariali Hindi Visharad Kendra and Hindi Prabodh Vidyalaya. Swarna Hazarika served in Hindi Sentinel, Purbanchal Prahari and Mahajati newspapers from 1962 to 2010. She was bestowed with the Dr Ambedkar Fellowship Award from the Dalit Sahitya Akademi and the Punya Prabha Rajkhowa Memorial Award.

Author of around 20 books, Hazarika was deeply associated with a number of social organisations including Mahila Samiti and Lekhika Samaroh Samiti. She leaves behind two sons, two daughters and a host of relatives. Her death was widely mourned.
