Guwahati: Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, has written to Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pammasani, seeking urgent intervention to address issues plaguing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY) schemes in the state.
In his letter, Saikia flagged serious concerns over the non-payment of wages to MGNREGA workers, insufficient job allocation, and incomplete housing projects under PMAY. “Many job card holders have not received their wages for months, violating the MGNREGA Act which mandates payment within 15 days of work completion,” he wrote, highlighting the financial distress caused during the festive season.
Citing official data, he pointed out that only 24,043 job card holders were provided the mandated 100 days of work last year, undermining the core objective of guaranteed rural employment.
Further, the Congress leader criticized the slow pace and alleged corruption in the execution of PMAY, with numerous houses left incomplete, delaying the goal of “Housing for All.”
Saikia has urged the ministry to ensure the immediate release of pending wages, full implementation of the 100-day work provision, and swift completion of PMAY houses while addressing irregularities in the process.
