LAKHIMPUR: In a sacred and spiritual environment on Sunday, the most revered annual Pal Nam Mahotsav started at Basudev Than Naruwa Xatra, the noted Baishnav Peeth of the Northeast region, located in Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district. This year the sacred religious event, organized on the occasion of the sacred month of Magh of the Indian calendar year, has been organized with a two-day long programme praying for the society free of miseries.
Notably, Pal Nam is an incessant congregational prayer or chanting of the name of God by the inmates of the Xatra and other devotees in group and in rotation. This event, which was introduced by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev for the spiritual uplift of Assamese community ushering in the bond of unity and harmony, is organized by Basudev Than Naruwa Xatra every year following the tradition, rules and ideology of Bordowa Xatra of Nagaon district. On Sunday, several hundreds of devotees and disciples of the Basudev Than Naruwa Xatra assembled at the Xatra on the occasion of the event.
The agenda of the event began with the nam performed by female devotees at 9 am. It was followed by community nam-prasanga at 10 am.
The main agenda of the Pal Nam commenced from 12 pm. It was inaugurated by Xatradhikar Bhupendra Deva Goswami. Nagaon Bali Xatra Xatriya Raju Deva Goswami as Nam-Acharya, Kaliabor Samaguri Xatra Deka-Xatriya Kamal Goswami as Duha-Acharya, Nagaon Aaibheti Xatra Xatriya Bubul Mahanta, Majuli Purani Samaguri Xatra Xatriya Bharat Mahanta and Narsimha Xatra Xatriya Bipul Mahanta as Path-Acharyas took part in the event. Deka-Xatradhikar Bhogendra Deva Goswami and Deka-Xatriya Mohan Deva Goswami lit the ceremonial earthen lamps of the Pal Nam in the evening. It is believed that the Almighty fulfills the hopes and aspirations of the devotees who offer Xarai-Naibedra in the Pal Nam event of the Basudev Than Naruwa Xatra. The event will conclude on Monday.
