SILCHAR: Despite massive chaos over ticket allotment as well as poor organizational base, the Congress in Cachar and Hailakandi put up quite an impressive fight in the Panchayat election. In Cachar, out of 25 ZPCs, the BJP registered convincing wins in 16 seats ensuring the formation of the Zila Parishad. Congress on the other hand won in 7 seven seats and in the remaining 2 seats, the independent candidates who came out victorious were actually from the Congress. The ruling party partner AGP failed to make its presence felt in the Muslim-dominated ZPCs. The AIUDF did not field any candidate in Cachar. It is clear from the result sheet that the Congress was successful in keeping its Muslim vote bank intact. A major jolt for the BJP was the defeat in the sole ZPC in Silchar Assembly constituency. The ruling party expectedly swept Lakhipur and Udharbond constituencies. However despite the advantageous position, ensured by a well-designed Panchayat delimitation, the BJP could win 2 seats in Katigorah, and 3 each in Dholai and Borkhola.

Hailakandi witnessed a fractured mandate with a slight edge for the Congress to form the Zila Parishad. Out of 8 ZPCs, both the BJP and the Congress won 3 seats each while the remaining 2 went to the Congress.

In Sribhumi, however, the BJP won 11 seats out of 16 ZPCs. The remaining 5 were won by the Congress. In minority areas, the ruling alliance fielded AGP candidates but they failed miserably.
