NEW DELHI: In a significant step for the improvement of the education scenario in Assam, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved establishing 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the country.
Among them, one will be in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, bringing the total number of Kendriya Vidyalayas to four in Assam.
Apart from the new KV, the state will have six new Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the districts of Sonitpur, Charaideo, Hojai, Majuli, South Salmara-Mankachar, and West Karbi Anglong.
The entire project, which will be implemented over eight years starting from 2025-26, is estimated to cost Rs 5,872.08 crore. The allocation includes Rs 2,862.71 crore for capital expenditure and Rs 3,009.37 crore for operational costs.
The expansion will cater for about 82,560 students and generate 5,388 permanent jobs, while the construction phase itself will provide additional employment opportunities. Currently, 1,256 Kendriya Vidyalayas are educating over 13.56 lakh students across India with an additional three branches abroad.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support.
CM Sarma emphasized that the opening of these new educational institutions would greatly contribute to the development of the state as it would increase opportunities for students, especially in rural areas. The opening of the new Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas will be a great step forward in the government's mission to improve the standards of education and access in Assam.
