TEZPUR: Renowned Assamese poet Pranab Kumar Barman was honoured with the prestigious title of ‘Kavya Konwar’ at a special felicitation ceremony organized by the socio-cultural organization Proyas in Tezpur. The event was held at the Baliram Lahkar auditorium of the Axomiya Club.

In the presence of a distinguished gathering, the event also saw the formal release of ‘Prem aru Bidrohor Jui,’ a collection of poems by Pritam Bora, editor of Proyas. The book was unveiled by Pranab Kumar Barman along with guests of honour including Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava, esteemed educationist Purneshwar Nath, and Dr Abani Kumar Sharma, retired Principal of Darrang College.

Proyas, known for its cultural activism in Tezpur, has been consistently working to revive and promote artistic and literary activities. In continuation of this effort, Monday’s event also featured the release of an Assamese modern song sung by Abhipriya Goswami, composed by Sanjay Krishna Gohain Baruah, and penned by Mukuta Goswami.

The event, hosted by Pankaj Baruah, President of the reception committee, opened with a soulful performance of a Borgeet by noted local singer Hiramon Lahkar. In his editorial remarks, Pritam Bora shared the vision and objectives of Proyas, reaffirming its commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural environment in Tezpur.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Prithiraj Rava expressed concern over the lack of prominent storytellers, novelists, and dramatists emerging from Tezpur in recent times. He noted that while the town had no shortage of actors and writers, there was a noticeable gap in literary and artistic figures capable of carrying forward Tezpur’s cultural legacy.

The highlight of the evening was the conferment of the honorary title, ‘Kavya Konwar,’ upon Pranab Kumar Barman, in recognition of his contribution to Assamese poetry and literature. The title was presented jointly by Proyas President Achyut Sharma, Editor Pritam Bora, reception committee President Pankaj Baruah, and MLA Prithiraj Rava.

Following the felicitation, Pranab Kumar Barman addressed the audience with an eloquent and captivating speech, leaving the hall resonating with appreciation. His words celebrated the power of poetry in shaping thought and society.

The programme concluded on a melodic note with the release of a new Assamese modern song performed by the young and talented Abhipriya Goswami, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.
