Potters hopeful of doing good business during Diwali in Dibrugarh

Binod Kumar, 43, is busy making earthen lamps (diyas) for the upcoming Diwali festival and is hopeful of a good business during this Diwali and Chhath Puja celebrations.

DIBRUGARH: Binod Kumar, 43, is busy making earthen lamps (diyas) for the upcoming Diwali festival and is hopeful of a good business during this Diwali and Chhath Puja celebrations. Binod is a third generation potter, who has adopted his traditional family business. He has been associated with the business for the last 30 years.

Talking to The Sentinel, Binod Kumar said, "Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we have faced lots of troubles for the last two years, this year our business is good and we are hoping it to continue for the upcoming festivals."

Binod Kumar is a resident of Kachari ghat, Dibrugarh and for the last several years, the family has been associated with pottery. "I've learned the art of making pottery from my father. Since childhood, I have seen my father and learnt the trade from him. Most of our family members are associated with pottery business. Pottery making is our traditional business," Binod said.

Binod said, "Every year during Diwali and Chhath Puja, we do good business because people buy earthen lamps from us. This time people are coming in large numbers to purchase diyas from us." "I've three children and all of them go to school. I want my children to be educated and do a good job. We didn't study much and got engaged in our traditional business," Binod said.

Binda Devi, wife of Binod Kumar was seen busy colouring the diyas. She states, "I help my husband by colouring the diyas. We sell one diya for Rs 1. We have seen bad times due to Covid-19 but now our business is slowly coming back on track."
