LAKHIMPUR: Four organizations of Lakhimpur district rocked North Lakhimpur town on Monday staging massive protest programme in support of their multiple demands. The activists of the Lakhimpur district committees of Communist Party of India (CPI), Nirman Shramik Santha, Krishak Sabha, UTUC initiated protest rally and Gana-dharna under the banner of their common forum Ganatantrik Ganamancha, led by its president Saifuddin Ali Hazarika and secretary Satya Ranjan Das. They took out the rally from the district office of the CPI and took a round of North Lakhimpur town. Then they staged gana-dharna in front of the Lakhimpur DC office.

During their demonstration, the protesters rocked the environment by shouting various slogans against the State and Union governments and in favour of their demands. By initiating the agitation programmes, the organizations demanded to declare flood and erosion of Assam as national problem, to transform the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project to multi-purpose project, to compensate the victims against the destruction caused by Ranganadi Hydro Electric Project, to stop the violation of labours’ right of living by amending the Labour Act, to grant Rs. 10,000 to each of the farmers aged over 60 years as farmer pension.

In addition to these demands, the organizations clamoured for the repair of the flood damaged roads and bridges of the district, exemption of land revenue to the flood-affected farmers, supply of free of cost fertilizers and seeds to the farmers, stern step against profit making mediators and merchants, rejuvenation of the Jagiroad and Pachgaon paper mills and release of the arrears to the employees and due inquiry into the unabated sale of fertilizers worth Rs. 266 at Rs 450. The organizations submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Lakhimpur DC in support of these demands.

On the other hand, the protesters demanded the Lakhimpur DC to take steps to construct a bridge over Shingara River by submitting a separate memorandum to him. They expressed vehement resentment over non-distribution of land pattas to the villagers of Chomani and Kuhiarbari under Naoboicha Revenue Circle despite their consecutive petitions. The organization further demanded him to declare enquiry against the cutting of one quintal of rice from the ration of 40 labourers of Chilonibari Tea Estate by the tea estate authority. They also demanded his initiative to stop the Naharlagun-Tinsukia Intercity Train at Kathalpukhuri station of the district. The leaders of the organizations declared that their common forum Gantantrik Ganamancha would intensify their agitation until and unless their demands were fulfilled.
