Protesters demanding Baghjan blowout compensation pelt stones at police, magistrate

TINSUKIA: The Baghjan oil blowout compensation issue in respect of Nutangaon affected area took a violent turn on Saturday after protesters from Nutangaon, mostly women who squatted on the Baghjan-Gotong Bridge, started pelting stones at a police party and a magistrate on duty.

Police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to disburse the protesters after Jaydeep Rajak, Circle Officer (attached), was injured on the face due to stone pelting. As many as 18 women protesters were taken into custody. The incident took place around 11.30 in the morning. According to Superintendent of Police Shiladitya Chetia, the protesters also damaged a temporary police camp near Gotong Bridge and attempted to block production of Lumbuguri's OCS (Oil Collection Station) on Friday night. The situation is under control but tense.
