DIBRUGARH: The Punjab Police today took custody of Waris Punjab De member Papalpreet Singh from the Dibrugarh Central Jail after the completion of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).
A Punjab Police team who arrived from Punjab sought permission for his custody and transit remand from the Court of the District and Sessions Judge, Dibrugarh. After getting permission from the Court, the Punjab Police team took custody of Papalpreet Singh from the Dibrugarh Jail. He also underwent a medical check-up at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).
A senior police official said that Papalpreet Singh will spend the night at the lock-up of the Dibrugarh Police Station and be flown to Punjab tomorrow under heavy security. In Punjab, he will be tried for the Ajnala Police Station attack case along with other Waris Punjab De members. Papalpreet Singh was brought to Dibrugarh Jail from Punjab on April 11, 2023.
It may be mentioned that 8 Waris Punjab De members lodged in Dibrugarh Jail have already been shifted to Punjab last month after the expiry of their NSA detention period. The eight members shifted were Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Harjeet Singh, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Bhagwant Singh, Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Basant Singh, and Varinder Singh Johal. These individuals are now facing trial in Punjab for their alleged involvement in the 2023 Ajnala Police Station attack case.
Significantly, after the release of Papalpreet Singh from Dibrugarh Jail, only Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh will now remain in the high-security Dibrugarh Jail. Amritpal Singh’s NSA detention period will expire on April 22 and it is likely that he will also be shifted to Punjab if the Punjab Government doesn’t extend his NSA term. It may be mentioned that Amritpal Singh had won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections while detained in Dibrugarh Jail.
