MANGALDAI: Renowned Nagara Naam artiste Ramcharan Bharali, who has been honoured with numerous awards and accolades, along with his troupe, performed the Nagara Naam on Saturday night at ‘Harmohan Kshetra’ at Dahi near here. This event was held to mark the seventh death anniversary of Hara Mohan Sharma, the father of Prafulla Sharma, a distinguished Suknani Ojha from Janaram Chowka village in Dahi, who is also a recipient of the state government’s artiste pension. Before the performance, Harmohan Sharma’s portrait was adorned with floral tributes, and lamps were lit by his eldest grandson, emerging astrologer Gautam Sharma, along with family members and local dignitaries.

Danda Dhar Deka, retired headmaster of Dahi Balika Vidyapeeth High School, recalled, “Late Harmohan Sharma was not only a renowned Kaviraj (traditional healer) but also a teacher. He had even traveled to the then capital, Shillong, in search of a job. Though he didn’t secure the job, he later sustained his family by using his intellect.”

The event, anchored by youth activist Hansa Dhar Deka, was inaugurated by senior journalist Hitesh Hazarika, who stated, “Ram Charan Bharali is not just a performer but a pillar in preserving the distinct identity of Nagara Naam in the state. At the age of 80, he remains a vigilant guardian of Nagara Naam.”

During the event, Bharali and his co-artists, along with the Chairperson of Kharupetia Municipality Board, Krishna Saha, President of Dahi Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee Dhruba Jyoti Sharma, and several local elders and intellectuals, were felicitated. Notably, Ramcharan Bharali captivated over a thousand spectators with his unique style of Nagara Naam performance until the early hours of the morning.
