Robbery on NH-38: Two Businessmen Looted Near Digboi

Robbery on NH-38 near Tingrai Station in Tinsukia adds to rising crime, raising concerns over safety of life and property in the area.

DIGBOI: A robbery on National Highway 38 on Sunday late evening at Tingrai Station area under Digboi Police Station in Tinsukia district further added to the rising crime graph in the jurisdiction, raising potential threat to life and property.

According to local residents along the highway, two Tinsukia-based businessmen on two wheelers (AS06S2460) were looted on the highway by a gang of unidentified robbers. The incident occurred at around 10 PM.

According to the victims identified as Sashi Gupta and Tultul Mahato, the gang who had come on a four wheeler looted Rs 7 lakh which was collected from various shopkeepers of Powai area as business proceeds.

“We were returning home when the gang confronted us and perpetrated the crime and fled,” said the looted businessmen, adding that the keys of their two wheelers and an iPhone were thrown away.

A similar incident of dacoity had occurred the preceding Sunday close by at the residence of Subham Dwara wherein gold ornaments worth more than Rs 6 lakh were stolen. Dwara and his family members were reportedly not at home while the act of robbery was committed. A scooty and a motorcycle were left behind by the robbers after committing the crime.

Again, on another Sunday, a grocery located along the highway belonging to Dharmendra Deka was looted by an unidentified gang. Several incidents of repeated shop burglary in Tingrai Station area have resulted in a sharp rise in crime statistics of the Assam Police Department.

Pertinent questions on the security of life and properties have been raised in the area despite police night patrolling remaining active on the highways and rural pockets. The VDPs in the area must remain proactive as reports and incidents of cattle lifters have already been rising at an alarming pace.

What is noteworthy about the commission of the crimes of similar nature is the occurrence of incidents only on Sundays.
