LAKHIMPUR: As per instruction issued from the central committee, the Lakhimpur district unit of Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) formed a human chain to demand the scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

Hundreds of activists of the organization, led by Lakhimpur unit president Daud Hussain, general secretary Utpal Borah and central committee finance secretary Bitopan Hatibaruah, initiated this agitation programme in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Staging the protest, the organization expressed strong resentment over the Narendra Modi-led BJP and its alliance government with regard to their initiatives undertaken in order to pass the controversial Bill in the upcoming parliamentary session ignoring the democratic agitations staged by various organizations of the State against the Bill. The organization flayed the Union Government alleging these initiatives as attempts to wipe out the existence of the Assamese community forever by granting citizenship to the aliens. The protesters displayed placards demanding the scrapping of the Bill while staging the protest.

GOLAGHAT: The activists of Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) Golaghat district committee staged protest near the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday and formed human chain to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment), Bill 2016. The protesters raised various slogans against the BJP government as well as the Sarbananda Sonowal-led State Government. The president and secretary of Golaghat SMSS, Satyabrata Saikia and Rupan Gogoi said that Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti would never allow this Bill to be implemented. They warned the government that no illegal migrants who entered Assam after March 25, 1971 could stay in Assam. They warned the BJP government not to think about bringing in CAB or the government would face massive agitation in coming days.
