MANGALDAI: Deep pain and grief has gripped the soul and minds of cross section of the society of greater Kalaigaon area in the Udalguri district following the demise of Bimal Prasad Sarma (72), a prominent selfless social activist, a humble businessman with high dignity and moral values who breathed his last at about 11 pm on Tuesday.
After returning from a family function at Mangaldai on Tuesday evening, he suffered from a chest pain and though he was immediately shifted to Mangaldai, he breathed his last. He was the eldest son of Maheswari Devi and renowned mouzadar Kirti Prasad Sarma of Silpota Mouza of Kalaigaon.
Though he completed his secondary education from Don Bosco School Guwahati, he never opted for any government job which was very easy for him at that time. Rather he started a book stall 'Monalisa' which was known to every household of the entire area in the mid- seventies. His polite behaviour with the familiar smile on his face was the point of attraction for his book stall. Showing his love and care to his brothers, he refused to shoulder the responsibility of mouzadar which he deserved being the eldest son of a mouzadar and asked his brother to accept it. He shouldered the responsibility as the president of Kalaigaon Chambers of Commerce for quite a long period and was also actively involved with Ram Janaki Mandir, Raas Mahotsav and other socio-religious functions.
On receipt of the news of demise, a large number of mourners, well-wishers, friends and relatives rushed to his residence at Kalaigaon town since early morning to offer their last respects. His mortal remains were taken in a mourning procession throughout the town largely participated by all sections of society irrespective of their political or religious identity. His last rite was performed as per the Vedic rituals at the public crematorium at Kalaigaon in presence of a large number of mourners.
He leaves behind his wife, a son, two daughters, two brothers, four married sisters and a number of relatives.
