DIBRUGARH: Field Office, Dibrugarh under Central Bureau of Communication in association with Dibrugarh Forest Division organized a special awareness programme at Brahmaputra River Bank near Rahmoria Village, Dikom, Dibrugarh on Thursday. The place is erosion-prone and was chosen by the forest division for planting trees to halt the process of soil erosion.
The programme aimed at creating awareness on the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative with special emphasis on World Environment Day, which is being observed on Thursday world over.
The programme started with felicitation of Ponakan Baruah, MLA, Chabua, Dibrugarh, who was also the chief guest of the programme.
Apart from Dibrugarh Forest Division, Rahmoria Gorakhania Pratirodh Sangram Manch, Rahmoria village was also part of the awareness programme. Local villagers and students of Rahmoria High School attended the programme.
While addressing the audience, Ponakan Baruah said that erosion of the Brahmaputra River Bank posed a danger to the villages which were near the banks of the river. He added that tree felling, improper construction, and lack of awareness among people about environmental conservation made the problem of erosion even more grave and that along with that, plastic pollution had become one of the important reasons for artificial floods in cities. The MLA encouraged the local people to plant more trees and also take the responsibility to protect the saplings.
He stated that unlike some other states where rainfall is scanty and climate is not conducive for plant growth, the climate in Assam is favourable for tree plantation and encouraged harnessing of this advantage to increase forest cover in the state.
S Kukil Dutta from Rahmoria Gorakhania Pratirodh Sangram Manch, Rahmoria village, encouraged the school students to actively participate in plantation drives to make planet Earth greener. The mass plantation drive started with the planting of a sapling by the MLA. Each of the audience was given a sapling to plant to mark the occasion of World Environment Day. Dibrugarh Forest Division Range Forest Officer Indrani Borgohain and Santosh Phukan, Deputy Range Forest Officer, were also present on the occasion.
