KOKRAJHAR: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary today thanked a student from Axillium School of Udalguri in the Central Hall of the Assam Assembly, who questioned why most legislators including ministers remained absent in the last budget session.

Students from different colleges of BTC and 25 members of the Kokrajhar Press Club were invited to witness the proceeding of the budget session today. Speaker Biswajit Daimary held an interactive meeting with the students, teachers, and mediapersons of Kokrajhar during the ongoing session at Central Hall. During the interaction, a student of Axillium School of Udalguri questioned why the attendance of legislators was poor and where their responsibilities were for being public representatives. The student also asked whether there was any provision against their absenteeism.

In his reply, Daimary said that the question by the student was very important and such questions will make the legislators realize their moral responsibilities. He said that attending sessions and participating in the business proceedings is of utmost importance for the public representatives and they must understand their moral responsibilities as they have to raise the local issues, problems, and grievances of their respective constituencies on the floor of the Assembly. He said that at least 50 percent of the total representatives should be present to run the session and every legislator should know the importance of attending the session without mandatory rules to attend the proceedings. He also said that the people and the students of the respective constituencies should ask their legislators to perform sincerely and raise their local issues. He thanked the student and said that he will inform the representatives of the house regarding the question on poor attendance of legislators.

Replying to questions raised by mediapersons of Kokrajhar on dress code of the legislators inside the house and complete paperless proceedings, he said that as of now, there was no mandatory dress code for the legislators attending sessions; however, every representative should come dressed in formals and not with T-shirts. On paperless proceedings, he said that almost all proceedings have been made paperless. However, for some reasons, the paper proceeding has also been kept. He further said that the proceedings of Assam Assembly are made in the three languages of Assamese, Bodo, and English and there is a system of automatic translation of all these three languages.
