JORHAT: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on December 13, claimed that the state has emerged as a model of development in the country, attributing this success to its "transparent and efficient" governance.
Speaking at the launch of a series of initiatives for Jorhat district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized his government’s dedication to building a “new Assam.” He highlighted the “significant” progress made over the past three years in key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
The event in Jorhat was part of the government’s ‘12 Days of Development’ initiative, which commenced on Wednesday. The Chief Minister stated that the Assam government has prioritized transparency and merit-based recruitment, enabling children from underprivileged families to secure government jobs.
Sarma announced that under the ‘12 Days of Development’ initiative, the education department has introduced three schemes aimed at providing significant benefits to students. He added that initiatives launched by other departments would also directly benefit millions of people across the state in the near future.
The Chief Minister stated that these measures are expected to positively impact over 10 lakh families. As part of the program, Sarma initiated the ceremonial distribution of ‘no dues certificates’ under the Assam Microfinance Incentive and Relief Scheme for ‘Category-III, Phase-II’ borrowers, covering an amount of Rs 223.30 crore.
Sarma disbursed Rs 35.38 crore to 686,487 families under the Revenue and Disaster Management Department. He also distributed seed capital under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme, benefiting 6,490 SHG members with a total amount of Rs 21.90 crore.
Later, the Chief Minister performed the ‘bhumi pujan’ and laid the foundation stone for the Jorhat Urban Water Supply Scheme, which will provide safe drinking water to the people of the district.
The Drink from Tap (DFT) project will have a financial outlay of Rs 220 crore, aiming to “ensure clean and uninterrupted water supply by leveraging advanced technology and modern infrastructure.” Officials stated that the project will cover 14,700 households, with a target completion date set for December 2026.
