DOOMDOOMA: The festivity of Uruka on Magh Bihu-eve was greatly marred due to the sudden collapse of popular singer Rajiv Sadiya while performing  at Rashabari Parjyaton Mela - the tourism festival site at Duamara on Sunday.

Although he was immediately rushed to a private nursing home at Doomdooma and then taken to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMC&H) for better treatment, yet the doctors were unable to revive him after his condition became critical due to massive heart attack which he suffered on the stage and consequently he breathed his last at AMC&H on Monday.

His death cast a pall of gloom as his songs were a strong voice of protest raised in the backdrop of the Assamese nationality question. Through his popular numbers that he sang to arouse the sense of patriotism for the cause of Assam, he carved a niche for himself soon as a revolutionary singer. It was a heart -rending scenario to witness that he would bid adieu from the people forever at such a young age and that too on the day of Magh Bihu.

Rich tributes were paid to Rajiv Sadiya by several organizations on Monday while his mortal remains were carried to his village in Sadiya Co-District of Tinsukia District. All Assam Students Union (AASU), Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Moran Students Union (AMSU), Tai-Ahom Chatra Sangha, Doomdooma Press Club, Moran Mahila Parishad, Bir Lachit Sena and many other organizations and individuals paid tributes to him at Doomdooma. Besides this, many dignitaries visited his house and offered condolences to the family members.

Sadiya was cremated at Sadiya on Tuesday in presence of a huge gathering comprising his well-wishers and the artist fraternity.
