Tripura: Large Consignment of Banned Cough Syrup Seized

An investigation has also been initiated regarding the matter by the Churaibari Police.

CHURAIBARI: Churaibari Police was able to confiscate a truck laden with contraband cough syrup. The market value of the confiscated contraband is said to be about Rs 1.5 Cr.

According to the Superintendent of Police Bhanupad Chakraborty, the operation was carried out based on a tip-off. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debashish Saha and a team from the Churaibari Police Station of Tripura carried out the operation.

The team intercepted a 12-wheeler truck bearing registration JH 07 L 9873. The vehicle was entering from the Assam side into Tripura at around 1 AM. On searching the contents of the truck, 16870 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup were recovered in 84 cartons without any proper documentation. The officials mentioned that the cartons were hidden among sacks of flour.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Osman in his driving license but later found to be Sahanuj, was arrested by the police and a case was registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985. An investigation has also been initiated regarding the matter by the Churaibari Police.

In the largest ever narcotics seizure in the recent past in Mizoram, heroin valued at Rs 31 crore smuggled from Myanmar was seized and five drug peddlers were arrested. Officials said that the Excise and Narcotics Department officials raided two locations in Aizawl and seized 6.05 kg of the drug in the past 24 hours. The officials seized 5.8 kg of heroin from a truck in the Zemabawk locality of Aizawl and over 248 gm of heroin was seized from the city’s Bawngkawn area.

N. Ngolang, a 55-year-old drug peddler from Tahan area of Myanmar, was arrested from Bawngkawn, while Md Nazimul Hussain Barbhuiya (34), Abdul Kalam Laskar (23), Kutbul Alom Laskar (28) and Sukur Ali Mazumder (22), all residents of Assam’s Cachar district, were detained from Zemabawk. Last week, Mizoram Police had arrested two Assam residents and 3 kg of heroin worth Rs 15 crore was seized from their possession.
