BONGAIGAON: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Jogighopa Terminal today, a major boost to the trade and transport infrastructure of the region. The terminal is expected to be a key driver in promoting economic cooperation between India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh and generating many jobs in the region.

At the inauguration ceremony, former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the terminal's ability to revolutionize trade patterns in the region. He said, "This terminal will greatly benefit Bhutan, India, and Bangladesh in trade and commerce, generating plenty of job opportunities for the youth and lowering logistics costs."

The Jogighopa Terminal is part of a larger plan to rejuvenate inland waterways in Northeast India. In February 2024, Minister Sonowal unveiled projects worth Rs 308 crore for developing waterway infrastructure, such as the building of passenger-cum-cargo terminals at Bogibeel, an inland water transport terminal at Sonamura in Tripura, and upgradation at Karimganj and Badarpur in Assam.

The terminal is also a component of the International Multimodal Logistics Park (IMLP) at Jogighopa, which is being developed under Bharatmala Pariyojana. The logistics park would integrate various modes of transportation and make Jogighopa a hub of transportation for the Northeast and neighboring nations.

The operationalization of the Jogighopa Terminal will be expected to increase economic growth in Assam as well as the broader Northeast region, enhancing trade efficiency and increasing local industries.
