Bajali: In a remarkable tribute to nature, villagers of Jalikhata in Bajali district celebrated the 213rd birthday of a historic tree, believed to be Asia’s second-largest, on the occasion of World Environment Day. The event was marked by the cutting of a 20-kg cake in the presence of Cabinet Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass and hundreds of enthusiastic locals.
The massive tree, which has stood tall for over two centuries, is revered by the villagers not just for its age and size but also as a symbol of environmental conservation and community pride. Locals say the tree has become an integral part of their cultural and ecological heritage.
“This tree is not just a plant, it’s a part of our identity. For generations, it has given us shade, shelter, and a message — to live in harmony with nature,” said one of the villagers during the event.
The unique celebration featured cultural performances, speeches on environmental awareness, and participation from environmentalists, students, and local organizations. Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass lauded the villagers’ initiative, stating, “This is a shining example of how we can connect our traditions with the cause of environmental protection. The way Jalikhata has honoured this tree is truly inspirational.”
Bajali Deputy Commissioner Mridul Kumar Das was also present at the programme. The celebration aimed not only to commemorate the tree’s long life but also to spread awareness about forest preservation and the urgent need to protect ancient natural treasures in the face of growing deforestation and climate change.
As the cake was cut under the sprawling canopy of the 213-year-old giant, the villagers pledged to continue nurturing their green heritage and encouraged others across Assam and the country to take similar steps in conserving nature.
