NAGAON: The State Water Resource Minister Pijush Hazarika, visited Nagaon and Hojai districts on Thursday. During the visit, he reviewed the ongoing construction of new embankments along the Kopili river and assessed the measures required for flood control. The minister first inspected the under - construction embankments in several locations within the current Barhampur constituency. The Water Resources Department’s Nagaon division is constructing two new embankments along the Kopili river’s left bank from Garokhanda, Borchunga to Changsaki and right bank from Baregoga to Niz Narikoli spanning a total length of 9.5 kilometres.
Minister Hazarika inspected the embankment at various locations, including Garokhanda and Changsaki, and directed the department to complete the remaining work before the monsoon season.
Recognizing the need for additional embankments to mitigate flood and erosion issues in the constituency, the Minister assured that the remaining 8-9 kilometres of embankment construction would be undertaken in phases.
During the recent panchayat election campaign, Minister Hazarika had promised the people of Jamunamukh in Barhampur constituency that he would visit the area to assess the flood and erosion issues caused by the Kopili river. As promised, the minister visited Jamunamukh on Friday, accompanied by MLA Jitu Goswami.
After assessing the area, he directed the Water Resources Department to prepare a project for constructing an 8 kilometre long embankment using geo-mega tubes to protect the area from erosion.
Later, Minister Hazarika inspected the ongoing construction of a new embankment along the right bank of the Kopili river from Kharikhana to Jogijan in Hojai district. He directed the departmental engineers and officials to complete the work smoothly and within the stipulated timeframe.
Through these inspections and directives, Minister Pijush Hazarika reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing flood control and erosion issues in the region, ensuring the safety and well-being of the local communities.
