DIBRUGARH: The streets of Dibrugarh have been inundated due to heavy rain which started last night. The most affected places are Mancotta road, Vivekananda Kendriya Vidyalaya road, Jail road (Khalihamari), Ganga Para, and PN road.

A heavy spell of rain started from Wednesday night and on Thursday morning, the roads of Dibrugarh were waterlogged. The busy Mancotta road was also badly affected by the flash flood at several stretches. The 300-metre stretch of road, near the newly-constructed flyover, from the Chowkidinghee side, resembled a rivulet with the water level reaching up to the knee-height.

“The drainage system of Dibrugarh is worst because of garbage dumping and could not flush the excess water from the city. Most of the drains are not clear as they are dumped with garbage and plastic bottles, which stopped the flow of water,” alleged a resident of Dibrugarh.

DMC Mayor Saikat Patra, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukon, and Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) Executive Officer Navas Das, conducted on-site inspections of the affected areas.

“We are taking swift measures to address the waterlogging issue. Emergency teams have been deployed zone-wise to clear blocked drains and pump out water from the worst-affected areas. We are implementing both short-term emergency measures and working on a comprehensive long-term solution to prevent waterlogging,” Patra said.

“Once again, the unseasonal rain in April has exposed the condition of the drains in Dibrugarh. Some of the drains were very poorly constructed with no engineering expertise. If in April, the condition is like this, what will happen in June and July,” Mantu Sharma, another resident, echoed concerns.
