KHERONI: My Bharat: Mera Yuva Bharat, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, in collaboration with the Subaltern Development Club, celebrated World Population Day at Prayash Senior Secondary School, Mailoo, West Karbi Anglong. The event drew over 80 students from various villages in the Mailoo area, highlighting the significance of addressing global population issues.
The programme featured Jeetendra Harijan, Vice-Principal of Kapili College, Kheroni, as the chief guest, Bharat Sahu, Assistant Teacher at PGHT Higher Secondary School, Jamunamukh, Hojai, as the resource person, and Dulal Rajbhar, Vice-Principal, and Sangita Chauhan, Assistant Professor of Prayash Senior Secondary School, Mailoo, as guest speakers. Each speaker delivered insightful addresses on the importance of World Population Day, focusing on themes such as overpopulation, healthcare, family planning, and gender equality.
Established by the United Nations in 1989, World Population Day aims to raise awareness about global population challenges and opportunities. Dulal Rajbhar emphasized that the global population is projected to exceed 8 billion in 2025, impacting the environment, education, employment, and resources. He urged communities and governments to prioritize sustainable development and improved living standards.
Sangita Chauhan highlighted the 2025 theme, ‘Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world,’ underscoring the importance of youth, gender equality, and informed choices about family size. She stressed that World Population Day is not just about numbers but about people’s rights, choices, and futures.
Bharat Sahu addressed Assam’s demographic challenges, noting that the state’s population growth has outpaced the national average in recent decades, driven partly by migration. This has strained resources and infrastructure, necessitating sustainable solutions. Jeetendra Harijan further discussed shifts in Assam’s demographic patterns, including changes in community composition, which pose both challenges and opportunities for the region.
The event inspired attendees to engage in discussions about sustainable development and equitable resource distribution, reinforcing the global call to action for a balanced and hopeful future.
