DHUBRI: A year-long centenary celebration of Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) got underway here in Dhubri with hoisting of 100 flags to mark the completion of the long journey of the apex body and various other programmes, including a colourful cultural rally that was taken out in the Dhubri historic town on Monday.
At the advent of the programme, three flags were hoisted by the president of Dhubri Xahitya Xabha, Udayan Chakraborty, former vice-president of AXX, Pachu Gopal Chakraborty and president of Dhubri Xahitya Xabha Centenary Celebration Committee and Dhubri Deputy Commissioner, Dibakar Nath followed by offering floral tributes to martyrs at Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua maidan amid a huge gathering.
Speaking on the occasion, Dhubri Xahitya Xabha president, Udayan Chakraborty recalled the history of Dhubri Xahitya Xabha and said that in the year of formation of AXX in Sivsagar in the year 1923, Dhubri Xahitya Xabha was also formed with Rabindra Nath Choudhury and Promatha Nath Chakraborty as president and secretary respectively.
"However, it took many years in shaping the body to this present stage with the contribution of many sons of soil who upheld the dignity of the mother language, Assamese to this westernmost part of Assam. They all will live in the heart, mind and memory of the people for their selfless contribution and sacrifices," Chakraborty added.
The inaugural function was also addressed by president of the centenary celebration committee and Dhubri Deputy Commissioner, Dibakar Nath and former vice-president of AXX, Pachu Gopal Chakraborty. Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath in his brief speech said that it was a memorable and glorious day. "I hope that as the centenary celebration got underway from today, you all will join the various programmes to be organized throughout 2023 and make it a grand success," Nath added.
Earlier, a cross-section of people, organizations and officials hoisted flags and joined the rally.
