CHURACHANDPUR: Following the brutal assault of Richard Hmar, a prominent Hmar tribal leader, prohibitory orders were immediately imposed, causing a wave of tension in Manipur's Churachandpur district.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at the VK Montessori complex in Zenhang Lamka, where unknown attackers targeted Hmar, who was serving as the general secretary of Hmar Inpui.

According to police, the incident was probably sparked by a heated argument that broke out after Hmar's car almost collided with a two-wheeler. Rapid escalation of this altercation led to the physical assault that has now placed the district under heightened alert.

The Additional District Magistrate issued strict prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 due to the gravity of the situation. It was decided that this move was necessary to manage the imminent threat to public order and to mitigate the risk of escalating ethnic tensions.

The enforced regulations expressly prohibit unauthorized processions, unlawful gatherings of five or more individuals, and the carrying of any form of weapon, including sticks and stones.

Following the attack, groups of demonstrators took to the streets to impose a shutdown across the town. There have been reports of men with sticks patrolling the area, and instances of stone-pelting have been reported in certain areas, further exacerbating the already tense situation.
