Manipur CM N Biren Singh Highlights Role of 'Shumang Leela' in Addressing Ethnic Crisis

Manipur CM N. Biren Singh stressed raising awareness about the ethnic crisis using Meitei theatre, 'Shumang Leela', stating that many people are still unaware of its root causes.

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh highlighted the need to address the root cause of the ongoing ethnic crisis in the state, stating that many people are still unaware of it. Speaking at an event in Imphal, he expressed optimism that traditional Meitei theatre, ‘Shumang Leela,’ could effectively raise public awareness about the crisis.

Recalling the role of ‘Shumang Leela’ during the COVID-19 pandemic, Singh shared how artists had successfully encouraged vaccination through street plays, overcoming public hesitation at the time. He praised their efforts in addressing societal challenges and fostering awareness.

The Chief Minister attended the award presentation for the 21st Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei and the play "3rd May," organized by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council at Th. Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Imphal. He commended the contributions of artists during difficult times and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting them.

Singh noted that Padma Shri Ratan Thiyam, a renowned playwright and theatre director, was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the Statehood Day celebration for his contributions to art and culture. Additionally, the government has allocated ₹2.5 crore to upgrade the Shumang Leela Shanglen to modern standards.

Ratan Thiyam appreciated the government’s initiatives, emphasizing the role of art and tourism in promoting cultural integration and unity in diversity. Awards were also presented to several notable artists for their contributions to Manipur’s rich cultural heritage.
