IMPHAL: The curfew that was imposed in Churachandpur district, Manipur, has been withdrawn as of Wednesday, said official sources. The curfew was first enforced on April 8 as tensions between the Zomi and Hmar tribal groups in the region escalated. While the curfew was supposed to continue until April 21, it was curtailed on April 16 after the situation improved in terms of law and order.
District Magistrate Dharun Kumar enforced the curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, which banned unauthorized processions, illegal assemblies of five or more persons, and the use of weapons, such as sticks and stones. But government forces and emergency services were exempted.
Even after the curfew was lifted, increased security measures are still in place, with both central and state forces deployed to sensitive locations in the district. This comes after a recent blast occurred at the Jamsuan and Sahei road junction in the New Lamka area at 1 am on Thursday. Local residents reported hearing a loud blast, which was linked to miscreants on two-wheelers near the Zenhang Lmaka cemetery, where a previous explosion happened on April 4.
The Central Village Defence Force (CVDF), along with local authorities and community organizations, condemned the incidents and pledged to investigate both explosions, which have instilled fear among residents but resulted in no reported casualties or damage.
