Manipur: Earthquake of Magnitude 3.1 Hits Churachandpur

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck Churachandpur, Manipur, at 12:35 PM on January 2. No damages or casualties have been reported.

IMPHAL: A minor earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale hit the Churachandpur district in Manipur on Thursday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers below the Earth's surface at 12:35 PM. The NCS reported that the quake had its epicenter at Latitude 24.53° N and Longitude 93.72° E.

A post shared by NCS on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed the seismic activity that read, "EQ of M: 3.1, On: 02/01/2025 12:35:14 IST, Lat: 24.53 N, Long: 93.72 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Churachandpur, Manipur."

Till now, nothing has been reported on casualties or structural damage. The authorities have confirmed that they will update it further as soon as information comes.

Earlier, Manipur experienced a mild earthquake of magnitude 3.6, with its epicenter in Bishnupur district at a depth of 10 km. There were no reports of casualties or damage to property. Quakes of the same intensity were earlier recorded on October 4 in Ukhrul and on August 6 in Imphal East, which were also of similar depths. As part of the high seismic Zone V, Manipur and other Northeastern states are vulnerable to frequent tremors due to tectonic activity. The seismic zoning in India categorizes the region as one of the most active, covering 11% of the area in Zone V.
