IMPHAL: An ambitious effort at mainstreaming the traditional fisherfolk into the modern financial system was undertaken at Champu Khangpok, a floating village located on the picturesque Loktak Lake in Manipur. Under the aegis of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), the Enrolment program for Fisherman Card was held with participation by Loktak Development Authority, the Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, Sinheibi Development Organisation, and the Champu Khangpok Floating Village Conservation and Management Committee.

The unique village, which is the biggest of its nature in India, has about 400 inhabitants who rely on the conventional fishing methods that are very interwoven with the lake's ecosystem. The project will equip the villagers with access to all the essential financial services, welfare schemes of the government, and other facilities so that financial inclusion is promoted, and economic stability is enhanced.

This is part of the National Fisheries Digital Platform. The Fisherman Card will connect the villagers to various government initiatives falling under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kiran Samridhi Sah-Yojana, ensuring that they are better equipped for securing their livelihoods and enjoying the welfare programs in place.

This programme will fit in a larger perspective for sustainable development in the region. It shall strengthen the people of Champu Khangpok while maintaining the preservation of the Loktak Lake ecosystem such that the community and the environment develop hand in hand. This initiative will be an important step toward quality life in this unique floating village.
