IMPHAL: The Manipur government has decided to extend the closure of schools and colleges in the Imphal Valley and Jiribam, citing ongoing unrest in the region. The announcement came late at night through a directive issued by the Directorate of Education – Schools.
In the notification, the reopening order issued earlier on November 24 was rescinded. It stated, "The school reopening order… regarding resumption of normal classes for all schools of the state, government, government-aided, private, and central schools, is hereby canceled and all schools of valley districts will continue to remain closed on 25th and 26th of November.
A similar order was issued on higher education institutions; the colleges operating in affected areas also closed.
Schools and colleges in some districts of the Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Jiribam – have been closed for around a week following prohibitory orders clamped on reports of violence in the region recently. The move seems to signify the concern for public security as the state grapples with fragile security measures.
While prohibitory orders continue in place, the government offered a short reprieve to people in the Valley from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. on any given day so that people are able to go out for everyday essentials while overall security restrictions would continue.
The decision to keep educational institutions closed underscores the ongoing tension in Manipur. Authorities are closely monitoring developments, prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and residents.
As the state grapples with unrest, the government’s swift action highlights the challenges of maintaining public order while minimizing disruption to daily life.
