IMPHAL : A massive amount of illicit items has been seized from different locations in Manipur. Banned cough syrups, Heroin, WY tablets and Brown Sugar has reportedly been impounded by the Manipur police, while arresting two in connection with the matter.
The police informed that, the arrest was managed based on prior intel. A special commando team of Thoubal police detained one purported drug smuggler, named Singgamayum Aliaskhan, 20 years old, and confiscated 396 bottles of cough syrup packed in four huge bags.
These bottles were MMD cough syrups, and few drug abusers use this banned item as a temporary source of high in Manipur. The episode took place on 13th of December, at around 6:30 am and the drugs were seized from the alleged trafficker's own residence.
Simultaneously, another smuggler identified as Nehminthang Kipgen, who is 38 years old , was detained by the police on the same day. 696 grams of brown sugar, one van, and a phone was seized from Dongjang village in Churachandpur district. The area borders Myanmar on the south.
In another raid, police laid hands on 122 grams of heroin and 3.319 kg of WY tablets at the H Kotlenphai area. The area falls under Tengnoupal district which borders Myanmar. These items were recovered from a vehicle supposedly abandoned by some smugglers.
The Tengnoupal district is well known for its drug cases earlier. In the middle of this year, Assam Rifles along with Manipur police seized World is Yours (WY) tablets worth Rs 5 crore from that area. The WY tablets are mostly consumed by teenagers and is considered a 'party drug'.
The police informed that, these illicit substances are transported through the India-Myanmar border. Drug trafficking is not a new phenomenon the state has witnessed. But the unmatched rise of poppy cultivation flashes a red signal that has detrimental impact on the Northeast regions as well as the country as a whole.
The drug smuggling issue is no more operating at a local level as it has become a multi-national trade, with involvement of drug mafias from countries like China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal.
