IMPHAL : Manipur police detained an editor of a daily newspaper on Wednesday following his statement in a panel discussion on a TV channel.

The editor was picked up by the police from his own residence. However, he was bailed after a few hours of detention. The matter went a little overboard, when the All Manipur Working Journalists Union and Editors' Guild in the state, chaired a meeting and discussed over the issue in a joint sitting on Wednesday.

The meeting was held in Manipur Press Club, where the organisations condemned police action. The journalist bodies claimed that the way in which the cops acted was completely wrong and uncalled for.

The way they picked up the editor of the Manipur newspaper and apprehended him was unnecessary. The editor has been identified as Hemantakumar Ningomba and he was working for the newspaper called, Sanaleibak.

He is a resident of Manipur's Khongman area. A team of police personnels from the Irilbung police station made the arrest on 4th of January, Wednesday.

Organisations like AMWJU and EGM came in support of the Hemantakumar. They asserted that, the editor is a man of good conduct and a refined journalist, and not an escapist.

The joint statement from the journalists bodies claimed that, this particular action of the police to pick him up without any sort of warrant and consent is utterly unnecessary. It affects the image and dignity of the editor in the society.

Furthermore, the statement mentioned that, there were better ways of dealing with the matter. The department would have arranged a discussion during the office hour solve the issue as no complaint has been registered against the editor, Hemantakumar.

The journalist bodies on behalf of the entire fraternity appealed the state administration to make sure and restrict any such incident in the future.
