IMPHAL: In a joint operation, the Manipur Police arrested a rank-and-file member of the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA), the armed unit of the outlawed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), in the south's Kakching district on Friday.
The anti-extortion team of the commandos of the Manipur police, acting on inputs about extortion racketeering in the area, carried out the operation.
As per the police sources, the intelligence-based operation was launched at Langmeidong village under Waikhong police station. The cordon and search operation continued for nearly two hours, finally culminating in the successful arrest of the PLA activist.
The arrested person has been named Thokchom Diamond Meitei, alias Tamthouba, a 26-year-old inhabitant of Langmeidong Mamang Leikai in Kakching district. It is reported that he had been threatening school officials and demanding money from schools in the Langmeidong locality for the last few months.
During the arrest, the police seized a mobile phone, a wallet holding Rs 320, and other personal items from his possession. After the arrest, a case under appropriate legal provisions was registered at Waikhong police station. Authorities have launched an intensive probe to find out more about his activities and potential involvement with other militant operations in the state.
The Manipur Police is further imposing strict actions against militant outfits and extortion syndicates, providing security and stability to the area.
