IMPHAL: Manipur security forces arrested eight persons involved in extortion and militant activities in various districts. The drives are part of an on-going exercise aimed at containing insurgency and upholding law and order in the state.
In Imphal West District, three persons were arrested from Lamdeng Khunou under Lamsang Police Station on the charges of extortion and abduction in the name of the banned organization Kangleipak Communist Party – People's War Group (KCP-PWG).
The arrested persons included Wahengbam Wanglen Meitei (22), Moirangthem Changkhonba Singh (18), and Khundongbam Meghachandra Singh (19). Their nefarious activities had been affecting the local population, and their arrest has been viewed as an important milestone in curbing insurgent activities in the area.
In another operation, security personnel arrested three active members of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak – Progressive (PREPAK-Pro) from Kumbi Terakhong under Kumbi Police Station, Bishnupur District. The arrested persons were Oinam Abung Meitei (31), Yumlembam Romesh Singh alias Ratan (47), and RK Navy Meitei (32).
A significant arms and ammunition haul was taken in their possession, which comprises one.303 Light Machine Gun (LMG), two magazines for.303 LMG, sixteen live.303 rounds, three 7.62 mm SLR live rounds, one 5.56 mm INSAS live round, one 7.62 mm AK live round, and twenty-four Ballister cartridges. It is one big success for an operation aimed at breaking up the militant groups of Bishnupur District.
Intensifying their crackdown further, Manipur Police arrested a active member of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Shagolshem Prabin Singh (27), from Ningombam Lamkhai crossing near Punya Toyota Showroom under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal West District.
He was allegedly collecting extortion from transport vehicles, which put the local transporters at a financial burden. His arrest is likely to provide relief to businesses and individuals hit by such criminal rackets.
Also, security agencies arrested Md. Taj Khan alias Romen (37), active PREPAK-Pro member, from Mantripukhri Bazar alongside Kalimai Mandir near Heingang Police Station under Imphal East District. Two mobile handsets and one wallet were confiscated from him.
He was claimed to have extorted money from shopkeepers within and around Mantripukhri Bazaar. Crackdown on such extortions helps in a significant way to guarantee the safety of traders and businessman in the district.
