Imphal: The Indian Army rescued eight civilians involved in a road accident in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, as per a defence statement. The incident occurred late Monday near Khunku Naga village in the Leimakhong area when a truck carrying eight individuals lost control and plunged into a deep gorge.
Upon receiving information from the chief of Henjang village, the army promptly dispatched a rescue team to the site. The injured were evacuated to a military hospital, where they received first-aid and trauma care from army doctors.
The timely response ensured the injured were provided immediate medical attention, the statement noted.
Recently, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the "Cashless Treatment" scheme, covering treatment costs up to ₹1.5 lakh for seven days for road accident victims, provided the police are informed within 24 hours. Additionally, families of deceased victims in hit-and-run cases will receive ₹2 lakh as ex-gratia payment.
Highlighting the government's commitment to road safety, Gadkari revealed alarming statistics for 2024: 1.8 lakh fatalities in road accidents, including 30,000 deaths caused by not wearing helmets. He emphasized that 66% of accidents involved individuals aged 18-34.
Gadkari also drew attention to the deaths of 10,000 children due to inadequate safety measures at entry and exit points near schools and colleges. To address this, stricter rules for school transport and identification of accident-prone "black spots" are being implemented.
The announcements were made during a meeting with state and union territory Transport Ministers in Delhi, focused on collaborative efforts to enhance road safety and improve transportation policies.
