SHILLONG: In a politically calibrated move to address the deepening administrative crisis in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), the Meghalaya State BJP delegation, led by State President Rikman G Momin, MDC and State Vice President Bernard N Marak, and State Secretary Angie Sangma, called on the  Governor to present a detailed representation on pressing issues affecting the Council.

In a press statement later, the BJP stated, “We apprised the  Governor about the irregularities of fund utilisation in GHADC which is hampering the functioning of the Council as employees have ceased work.”

Highlighting a major constitutional concern, the BJP delegation pointed out, “Non-Tribals are being elected to the Tribal Autonomous District Council,” and stressed that “it has been proposed that Tribal certificate be made mandatory during nomination.”

In a push for financial decentralisation, the party demanded, “Constitution of the State Finance Commission for devolution of funds,” and further urged the government for the “handing over of the Rural and Urban Local Bodies to ADCs.”

The BJP team informed that the  Governor “assured to look into these matters,” following which they “invited him to visit Garo Hills to review the issues of the Council.”

Reinforcing their earlier communication, the party recalled, “We had earlier submitted a letter requesting the Honourable Governor to hold a special session in GHADC to discuss matters related to the ongoing crisis.”
