SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Council of Communist Party of India (CPI) has expressed deep concern over the attempt of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government to bring in the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in the Parliament on Monday.

"The proposed amendments to the Citizenship Act will totally invert the secular character of Indian citizenship as envisioned by the Constitution makers," CPI Meghalaya State Council secretary S Gupta said.

He also said that "the proposed amendments to the CAB are moves to replace it with the majoritarian designs of the BJP-RSS."

Gupta also said that the plans to impose the National Register of Citizens (NRC) all over the country will only create hatred and animosity between communities and will put strain on the secular, democratic fabric of the Constitution and the society.

The party further stated that as the government is unable to resolve the economic slowdown it is indulging in divisive and diversionary tactics to confuse the people.

"The Communist Party of India -- along with other Left parties -- is in the forefront to oppose CAB inside the Parliament as well as outside the House," Gupta pointed out.
